چکیده

Foundations Similarity index = a numerical index describing the similarity of two community samples in terms of their species content Similarity matrix = a square, symmetrical matrix with the similarity value of every pair of samples, if Q-mode, or species, if R-mode, in the data matrix The similarity matrix is the basis for all multivariate techniques depicting relationships among community samples or taxa, so the choices made at the initial stage of an analysis will strongly influence the results at the final stage All similarity metrics can be converted to difference metrics by subtracting them from their maximum value (1.0 in all cases presented here); similarity is required for cluster analysis, whereas difference is required for ordination analysis p = number of taxa N = number of samples xAi = abundance of species i in sample A

Long-Term Cycles in the History of Life: Periodic Biodiversity in the Paleobiology Database

Time series analysis of fossil biodiversity of marine invertebrates in the Paleobiology Database (PBDB) shows a significant periodicity at approximately 63 My, in agreement with previous analyses based on the Sepkoski database. I discuss how this result did not appear in a previous analysis of the PBDB. The existence of the 63 My periodicity, despite very different treatment of systematic error...

The course met for twentyone three-hour sessions, thus encompassing more contact time than a standard college-level course. The course was structured in an “Inform, Experience, Implement” active-learning format: students were exposed to the hi...

The effects of taxonomic standardization on sampling-standardized estimates of historical diversity.

Occurrence-based databases such as the Palaeobiology database (PBDB) provide means of accommodating the heterogeneities of the fossil record when evaluating historical diversity patterns. Although palaeontologists have given ample attention to the effects of taxonomic practice on diversity patterns derived from synoptic databases (those using first and last appearances of taxa), workers have no...
